Can I refinance a personal loan? Check the prepayment box

Yes, if a new lender approves you. Where your loan disclosure states any prepayment charge, plus a worked table on origination fees and break-even.

Can I refinance a personal loan? Yes, if a new lender approves you: the new loan pays your old loan’s payoff amount and replaces it. Before comparing offers, find the prepayment statement in your current loan’s Truth in Lending disclosure, and check whether the new loan’s origination fee comes out of its proceeds.

This is an evergreen explainer, not news. This desk read the Regulation Z text, the CFPB’s official commentary and the lender pages named here on 16 October 2026. The citations are US federal law; other countries set their own disclosure rules.

Where does my loan say whether there is a prepayment penalty?

In the disclosure you received at signing. 12 CFR 1026.18(k) requires two statements. Where interest is charged on the unpaid principal balance, the disclosure must say “whether or not a charge may be imposed” for paying principal early. Where the finance charge is computed another way, as on a precomputed loan, it must say whether you are entitled to a rebate of finance charge on prepayment.

The CFPB’s official commentary on section 1026.18 adds that the creditor must give a definitive statement either way, and that no penalty may not simply be inferred from the absence of a disclosure. A blank is not a “no”. If you cannot find the statement, ask the lender before you apply anywhere.

Is the old loan’s origination fee refunded?

Do not plan on it. The same commentary says a prepaid finance charge is not considered a prepayment penalty under 18(k)(1), and a creditor may state that the borrower “will not be entitled to a refund of the prepaid finance charge”. The fee you paid at the start is spent; only your contract can say otherwise.

Can I refinance a personal loan if the fee comes out of the proceeds?

Yes, but you borrow more than the payoff. Under section 1026.18(b), the amount financed is the principal plus other amounts financed, minus any prepaid finance charge. Upgrade’s fee page, updated April 23, 2026, puts its origination fee at typically 1.85% to 9.99%, usually deducted from proceeds: a $10,000 loan with a 5% fee pays out $9,500, and you repay $10,000.

So the principal you need is the payoff divided by one minus the fee rate. The payoff itself is the balance plus interest to the day funds arrive; see how per diem interest is calculated and why the payoff exceeds the balance. OneMain’s refinance guide says the current lender can provide a 10-day payoff letter, often requested by the new lender. If the 18(k) statement says a prepayment charge may apply, add it to the payoff before grossing up.

Is it worth refinancing a personal loan? A break-even table

Illustrative desk arithmetic, not any lender’s offer: an assumed $8,000 payoff on an old loan at 18%, replaced at 11%. The old loan’s first month of interest is $120.00.

New-loan feePrincipal neededFee paidMonth-one interestMonth-one savingMonths to recover fee
None$8,000.00$0.00$73.33$46.670
1.85%$8,150.79$150.79$74.72$45.283.3
5%$8,421.05$421.05$77.19$42.819.8
9.99%$8,887.90$887.90$81.47$38.5323.0

The months column divides the fee by the first month’s saving, so treat it as a lower bound: both balances fall, and the gap narrows. Stretching the term lowers the payment but, as OneMain’s guide puts it, you will likely pay more interest over the life of the loan. The same comparison logic runs through our auto-refinance marketplaces assessment.

Common questions

How soon can you refinance a personal loan?

As soon as a new lender will approve you and your current loan allows it. The section 1026.18 text this desk read sets no waiting period; it governs what the disclosure must say. The limit that matters is the prepayment statement: if it says a charge may apply, the size and timing of that charge are in your contract.

Does refinancing a personal loan hurt your credit?

The pages this desk read put no figure on it, so neither do we. OneMain’s guide says approval turns on creditworthiness and a history of timely payments, including on the current loan, and suggests checking your score and report before applying. Ask each lender whether its rate check is a soft or a hard inquiry.

Is it worth refinancing a personal loan?

Only if the interest you save outlasts what you pay to switch. Add any prepayment charge to the payoff, gross the total up for the new loan’s origination fee, then divide that fee by the monthly saving. In the illustrative table above, a 5% fee takes about ten months to recover. OneMain’s guide warns a longer term likely means more total interest.

Can I refinance a personal loan with the same lender?

Ask your current lender; whether it will refinance its own loan is its decision. OneMain’s guide says some lenders, OneMain among them, use the phrase loan renewal for refinancing, so look for that term too. The arithmetic does not change: the payoff, any prepayment charge and any new origination fee still decide whether it pays.

Nothing here is financial advice. Your loan agreement and its disclosure set the real figures; use a lender licensed where you live, verify that licence yourself, and read the new credit agreement in full before you sign.
